Virtual-Reality Rip Current Rescue Program

A New Lifesaver at the Beach Sponsored by The Port of Corpus Christi

Experience a groundbreaking VR simulation program designed to teach critical rip current survival skills. Thanks to a generous donation from The Port of Corpus Christi, the Je’Sani Smith Foundation proudly presents the “Virtual-Reality Rip Current Rescue'' program developed by Hofstra University. This state-of-the-art virtual reality technology creates a realistic and engaging environment where participants can safely learn how to escape a rip current.

Kiwana Denson, founder and president of the Je’Sani Smith Foundation, says, "By immersing in this VR experience, participants have a unique opportunity to visualize escape techniques and build the muscle memory needed to break free from dangerous rip currents. This training helps your body know exactly what to do to stay calm and act swiftly. It's about creating those memorable moments and applying them when it matters most."

Revolutionizing Beach Safety with VR Technology

The Texas Coastal Bend community is embracing a novel approach to tackle the dangers of rip currents: virtual reality. This innovative technology revolutionizes beach safety, one VR headset at a time.

"Most of us know that being prepared and alert saves lives, especially at the beach. However, rip currents remain a significant challenge for many beachgoers in our communities," adds Kiwana Denson.

This new effort utilizes a simulation developed by Dr. Jase Bernhardt, Associate Professor at Hofstra University with funding from New York Sea Grant. “Initially we used a hand controller, but now we are implementing motion tracking so that users will be moving their arms as though they are swimming,” he said.

Equip Yourself with Life-Saving Skills

This groundbreaking virtual reality experience provided by the Je’Sani Smith Foundation can now equip everyone in our community with crucial survival skills. This immersive simulation allows participants to feel firsthand what it's like to be caught in a rip current, all within the safety of a virtual environment.

"Using technology to simulate the pull of a rip current, we teach participants to swim parallel to the shore until they're free," adds Kiwana. “This method not only saves lives but also reduces panic, reminding beachgoers to signal for help calmly.”

What You Will Learn and Do:

  1. Understand Rip Currents:

    • Discover what rip currents are, how they form, and why they are dangerous. Gain insights into the science behind these powerful ocean phenomena.

  2. Hands-On VR Experience:

    • Strap on a VR headset and use joysticks to simulate the experience of being caught in a rip current. Feel the sensation of the water's pull and learn to stay calm under pressure.

  3. Escape Techniques:

    • Practice the correct method of escaping a rip current by swimming parallel to the shore. The simulation will guide you through the steps, reinforcing the importance of this life-saving technique.

  4. Safety Signals:

    • Learn how to signal for help effectively. The VR program will demonstrate the proper way to attract the attention of lifeguards and other beachgoers.

  5. Debrief and Review:

    • After each simulation, review your performance and receive feedback. Understand what you did well and what you can improve on for real-life situations.

  6. Interactive Q&A:

    • Engage with experts in coastal safety and VR technology. Ask questions, share your experiences, and gain deeper knowledge about beach safety measures.

Program Impact

Rip currents claim over 100 lives annually in the U.S. and are responsible for more than 80% of lifeguard rescues. The Je’Sani Smith Foundation VR program aims to reduce these numbers by educating participants on how to handle these hazardous situations confidently. By increasing awareness and preparedness, this program seeks to save lives and make our beaches safer for everyone.
